I have just put 205 50's on mine....surely more rubber on the road means better handling ??  Mines lowered as well and there is still a bit of a gap between the tyre and the arch.

More rubber on the road will in theory give you more raw grip but grip is not handling. Handling is more about the balance of the vehicle in various cornering states. Watch an old GP car such as a 250F Maserati; no real grip by modern standards but superb handling that allows it to procede in those wonderful drifts that the old cars are so famous for.

hang on, im not getting this...how does the tyre size affect the speedo? i mean i can understand how it might if you were going up from say 14 inch to 17 inch...but i didnt know it could be affected in other ways? or am i just being thick?

only a tiny bit and wasnt out of preference!
was waiting 2 hours to get tyres (the delivery hadnt come and mine were bald so couldnt come back)
was either a case of paying £60 for two at the place i was at or £90 for two... so i decided to get them! :p
