Mk1, was an amazing car for the day, just compare it with any other car of the mid 70s..

Mk2, was  a Mk1 refined, and as pure a Golf as the Mk1..

Mk3, was not a Golf at all, it was a different car, that VW decided to put a Golf badge on, in a similar way the new water cooled Beetle, is not a real Beetle...
Just my opinion

thats rubbish mate, just cus its safety features make it a bit heavier its slated as a bad car, ive owned both, i cant see what your all going on about, the mk1 i agree with, i remember the day they rolled off the production line and the hype it caused in the automotive world, it deserves the place of the "gti crown" ten times over, jeremy clarkson even loves them, but not the mk2 lol but like i said each to there own, im just defending the fact the mk3 is a better everyday car than the mk2 .

the mk3 is not a bad car and is a more comfortable and safer daily driver than a mk2.

......... oh and providing me with a dry seat!!!!

The old car I've had with a leak was a Mk3 ! Came back from 4days away to find the footwell full of water.
Even my old Mk2 GL with sunroof didn't leak.

But as you say, each to their own. What brings us together on this forum is a love for VWs, Golfs in particular.
Each persons experience is different and down to whether the car they buy is decent or not. You could have a Mk4 less than 10yrs old and it have loads of problems. Equally you could have a Mk2 20yrs old with no problems.

These days, aged 30, I probably wouldn't want to run around in a Mk1 or Mk2, but would quite happily have them for weekend fun.
All those safety features that make the Mk3/4/5/6 heavier are the things I want to keep my family safe in the car.
