Well put Dubfan  , at the end of the day the only car that deserves the crown of a real GTi is the mk1, this is where it all started and we are just following the shadow of it. It was made with one intension and that was to put a smile on peoples faces with good performance, weight, balance, looks and get you from A to B as quickly as possible and make you feel like a real racing driver. As time has gone by VW have made the GTi bigger and bulkier and yes this is for safty reason. Everybody for their own, no matter where we go or how fast we go at the end of the day we all bear the GTi badge and no matter what road you drive on all other car makes know they will never come close to it.

thats why i'm driveing a mk5 gttdi quite a lot.

the mk3 is quite a good car for its time but it's also really crap at being a golf GTI .  tBH i wouldn't have anything against mk3 GTI's if they din't hav a GTI badge on them as really they are just anothere family wagon that drive like a trifel and there are meany cars out there like that.

MK2 FTW  and yes the mk2 is more fun than the mk5 even tho the mk5 is faster and much more comfy on the long trips.  the synco is defantly quicker on the twisty stuff if a 2wd mk2 would be is an intresting question

......... oh and providing me with a dry seat!!!!

The old car I've had with a leak was a Mk3 ! Came back from 4days away to find the footwell full of water.
Even my old Mk2 GL with sunroof didn't leak.

But as you say, each to their own. What brings us together on this forum is a love for VWs, Golfs in particular.
Each persons experience is different and down to whether the car they buy is decent or not. You could have a Mk4 less than 10yrs old and it have loads of problems. Equally you could have a Mk2 20yrs old with no problems.

These days, aged 30, I probably wouldn't want to run around in a Mk1 or Mk2, but would quite happily have them for weekend fun.
All those safety features that make the Mk3/4/5/6 heavier are the things I want to keep my family safe in the car.

my thoughts exactly bud.  p.s i do love mk2`s really,

Mk1, was an amazing car for the day, just compare it with any other car of the mid 70s..

Mk2, was  a Mk1 refined, and as pure a Golf as the Mk1..

Mk3, was not a Golf at all, it was a different car, that VW decided to put a Golf badge on, in a similar way the new water cooled Beetle, is not a real Beetle...
Just my opinion

Thom

thats rubbish mate, just cus its safety features make it a bit heavier its slated as a bad car, ive owned both, i cant see what your all going on about, the mk1 i agree with, i remember the day they rolled off the production line and the hype it caused in the automotive world, it deserves the place of the "gti crown" ten times over, jeremy clarkson even loves them, but not the mk2 lol but like i said each to there own, im just defending the fact the mk3 is a better everyday car than the mk2 .

Thom has a point but so do you, the MK3 is a golf and VW had to make a lot of the changes they made to keep up with the competion but they failed when they bought it out as a GTI (especially the 8v).  Like you say, it is a better everyday car and i agree, but thats not what the GTI was supposed to be about IMO,

VR6 was never aimed at the GTI market but the likes of Bmw 3 series and Merc C class, 8v should never have had the GTI badge but Sport or highline, 16v was ok being badged as a GTI but lets be honest mk3's standard are very poor in terms of handling.

These MK3 bashing threads always go the same way, always start as a comedy bashing followed by lots of love followed by a serious  yet valid debate.

Then eventually all the mk3 owners........................
