If you had a 16V then I would say give it a go.  Like me , 3.5-4,000 rpm at 75-80 mph is not to good for economy.

You can get 6th gear cogs/adaptors for the Mk2 golf.  There was a thread on here about 6 months ago on it.

Doesnt the 1.6 Driver have 4+E gear?

The 5th gear on a 8v isnt much different from that really dude, im right up there around 3500 rpm at 70ish too.

Dont think Il bother with an extra gear, il just change the 5th.

So possibly the driver box is a 4+E?  can anyone confirm that?

do a quick search, i asked this a few years ago and got good answers.

I just never followed through on it, as i couldn't be bothered. If i crunched motorway miles, i reckon the savings would have been worthwhile

Wouldnt it take ages to notice a difference though.? In savings, would you do it yourself.?

Depends how much I can get the bits for, My mate would put it in for me so the only expenses are the ones from buying the bits.

Thing is, I had another gti once and it had a 5th gear that did 70 at about 2200 rpm,

I figure that the amount of time I spend in 5th gear, I could save moneys, I do drive long distance quite abit.

Searched again using your username, no luck again, maybe it doesnt go back that far?  :undecided:

Im well up for doing it, I just wanna make sure I get the right gearbox to get bits out of.
