after selling my mk4 20v T, and buying a sensible car (06 jetta diesel) i want to get stuck back in to the vw world,
i want a MK2 GTI 16v, but my knowledge on them is minimal,
So i'm hoping for some advice and suggestion on the dangers of buying a mk2 and possible some things i should look out for,
any help would be much appreciated

Biggest issue is... RUST... Rust... Rust & Guess what RUST..... 

So look for one with a solid body & Chassis..

Most mechanical items can be fixed without many issues...

Look at the body mate, i didnt and have now found one of the sills rusted through !! And my dads body shop hasnt5 got back too me so doesn't look like id get it repaired cheap!!

Use the seach function.  This came up recently and lots of posts on it.

Mk2 Golfs are put together like Meccano.  All parts are cheap and available.

So as long as the body (shell) is fine then you're on to a winner.  

Rust around windscreen wiper blanks, fuel filler cap, sills, arches etc..

If there is no rust and it goes, you're ok.

so in guess i'll be looking for rust then, lol
what sort of price should i expect to pay for a good example?
and also is there a massive difference in proformance between the 8v and the 16v?

depends really. i mint condition 16v thats been kept original would be more expensive than say a 2.0l 16v conversion. 8v's are cheaper seem to be cheaper, 16v's you need to rev high to get the power, 8vs have the power down low on the rev range.

I paid just over 2k for mine, had suspension work done and 2.0l conversion, would of been worth it if the speakers where wired up it didnt struggle when cold and didnt have a rusty sill!! Yes i didnt do my research.
