Dont need to! I onlt had it on the bumpers and it looked fine! If you really wanted to, it wouldnt be hard at all to run it along the top of the rubbing strips....  The grille would be the only place to cause a problem, and you could paint that easily, its a raised section anyway, so you could get it straight and everything.

The proper striping is a plastic jobbie, no longer available. You would have to find a scrap one and carefully remove it.

Not the one round the car, the one on the grill is painted. The ones on the bumper and body are proper plastic strips.

the red stripe could look cool as your cars red but i prefer the black and if your going old school, red makes it look '80's rather than retro. i'd try to get the chrome ones.

you are aware that the mk2 is very much a car of the 80s arent you?

you cannot make a mk2 retro anymore than 1984, so we're talking red stripes. if you go gti without red stripes and call it old school then you just look a bit desperate.

bit like flower power but without the flowers.

wow thanks for being both informative and patronising as ever.

i simply meant that black and red looks dated, whether it is period or not! chrome looks good, which is probably why people want it on their cars.
team grumpy....... its a way of life, not a forum post

Oh right... I never had them obviously, so never really seen them! Its just on my black bumpers, it looks like its got exactly the same strip on it, just not painted...? So.... if i wanted to change tem, i wouldnt jus paint them, i'd get a new strip??

The genuine strip round the car is raised on a black peice of trim. You get away with the stickers but not on the sides of the car.  I suppose it depends how bothered you are about authenticity.

Ooh!  Good debate!

I reckon that both the red and the chrome are old skool...however the chrome is more so as it has been used on cars for decades. The red stripes ARE an 80's thang but hey, thats 25 years, hardly contemporary. Also the chrome will suit almost any car, whereas the red is particularly suited to certain colours and styles.

It's nice to see a bit of discussion on Old Skool Retro and not about F&F spoilers and 19" Spinners.
