Lacquer peel on carbon - repairable?
« on: 22 September 2010, 10:36 »
I need to get around to sorting this as its driving me mad. The lacquer has peeled from my carbon front grille and it now looks sh*t. . Ive only had it on there for about a year and a half but bare in mind it sat still for 9 months of that, would that really cause it to peel?

Is this repairable or do I need to get a new one (£200 :() and will the new one do this? Anyone else had problems with their CF front grilles? Any suggestions?

Cheers

Actually Alan, that looks like 3M vinyl that has been laquered to look more like carbon fibre :undecided:

What make is the cover?

a true CF wouldn't peel like that as the resin is bonded and impregnated into the carbon fibre weave itself and should be a lot thicker than it looks in your pics.

I don't have it. I went into the back of someone and smashed it up which is why I got it done in the first place.

I'll give the garage a bell and see what they have to say.

Hmm, ask Redrobin about his OSIR carbon front. That looks in perfect nick and I'm sure he has had it on there much longer than you.

Don't despair though as it would be cheaper to sand and laquer it again, rather than buy a new one if it came down to that

Book her in next Saturday to get the handbrake switch sorted (after nearly 2 months of driving around with a constant DING DING DING DING I had to get that sorted) and they are going to repair the grille and have it looking like new :)

I shall report back next week on how I get on.

Just how did you manage that?  Care to pass on any trade secrets so i can put up with the misses?

Finally got it back last night and the boys over at Tuning Werkes (http://www.tuningwerkes.com)  have done another Stella job. There were loads of little stone chips all over it which has broken the laquer and cased it all to peel from the inside out (a bit like whiteworm on the monzas).
