Hi, advice please :-)
« on: 21 September 2010, 16:29 »
Hi all, my first post so excuse any schoolboy errors!

I have recently bought a Mk3 Gti 16v and Its great. Its gone in for a full service today so should be nice and smooth when I get it back.

I've been all around the web and forums and am getting a bit lost so I thought you guys maybe able to help!

I want to get the car back to its original/ish condition and the two things i'm stuck with are;

1- Sills - They are crap and the inner metal strip is rusted. I have taken strips off and left the sill covers on there, they are also knackered. Is there anywhere that does 'tasteful' sills that would suit the original body kit or does any one know of any company's that imitate the original. Its too much cash from VW dealers for all the bits I want. There are some on Ebay but they probably won't last long as secondhand.

2 - Suspension - The car has been lowered at some stage and looks great, but its soooooo hard and unforgiving. Am I going to have to replace the whole units? if so can anyone recommend a good compromise between comfort and performance/looks. Or can I just get new springs?

Any advice much appreciated.

Joe

Not got these wheels, seller decided to keep them. Will get images up soon.

1. Nope! Well there are a few out there but will depend on your taste.
Take it all off and see if you like the bare look?

2. You will have to get adjustable coilovers (approx £450 plus) to get a ride to suit you.

Hi len,

I love the blue lights btw, don't listen to the masses!

Thanks for your answers. I may give the bare look a go.
what did you do to yours on the mystic blue?

450 is a lot for me at the moment, any other options for me?

Thanks

J

1. I have some RGM skirts that I think suit the car well, I originally bought them for the same reasons as you, but ended up getting the matching rear valance and vr6 splitter for the front from eurowagens, I think its a nice look
Heres a link for all the bits RGM do for the mk3, I run the 'side skirts' and 'valance with mesh (rear)' the valance isnt as chavvy as it sounds :P

2. There are plenty of kits for under 450, but as said the more you spend the better the ride. I spent around 350 if I remember rightly on my suspension (Weitec ultra GT) and there not coilovers just fixed 40mm, but the ride is soooo nice its worth it imo. Its not untill I drive something else I remember what body roll is :P

Sweet, thanks dan. Yours do look pretty sweet, nice and subtle.

I just took them off as they were pissing me off only to find that toward the front wheels, someone has previously jacked the car up and crushed the sills. They have been pushed up about an inch! Nasty.

I do like the bare look but now those dents will have to be sorted, cos that will piss me off too!

And so the journey begins.

Anyone know a good welder/bodyshop in bristol?
