newbie needing a few bits of advice

Het everyone just a few questions for you.
I've just bought a mk3gti the other day. Its taxed and tested, original gti alloys headlight conversion, bog standard everywhere else and goes like stink.
Its a p reg and i paid £300 for it, is that a gd price? i've added a link to a pic below lol.
Anyways now the annoying stuff.
Can the clutch be adjusted? mines sits high, still works fine but  idont like it high lol.
Does the heat sheild for the exhaust have to be there? can it be replaced with something else as  mines rattles like hell at idle.
How can you tell if its an 8v or a 16v? sorry to sound like a clown but i dont have a clue lol.
I dont want to ruin the car, i want to keep it as original looking as possible with slight mods, ie, lowered nice alloys, performance gain etc.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Look at the engine if it has a huge 16v stamped on it then its a 16v!

Depends which heatshield you are talking about as there are about 5!

ah ok i'll have a look then lol, its the heat shield above the backbox just behind the bumper, the bolts rusted away on 1 side so it makes a hella noise

Clutch should be a self adjusting cable job, if it has a notchy action on the pedal then a new cable might sort you out.. The actual clutch itself could be worn and producing a similar situation biting point wise.. depends how it's been used and treated.. mine for instance has 103k on the clock original clutch and still good.

the clutch is smooth and never misses a beat when pulling off and changing gear, the guy i got it off of only used it for a week and left it sitting for ages coz he bought a vectra

If it is a 8v then you could try replacing the clutch cable on a 16v it is hyd, if it is high then you may need to replace the clutch.

ok so iv determined that iv got an 8v engine but i dont see anything wrong with it lol still fast

The heatshield above the backbox will have to be retained. You have the petrol tank right next to it!
So is the stud rusted away completely?
If so you may have to drill through the floor.

i cant believe you bought a car without know the engine? (sorry if i sound like a d**k, probably my jealousy of not having a gti)
