to upgrade to larger discs yes you would need a carrier. you would also need later 16v hubs to mount the carrier on. I think the drive shafts are the same whatever you do. upgrading to the 256mm 16v discs would make a big difference over the driver setup if you can find the bits in the scrapper for a good price
