2l 8v but which gearbox......
« on: 05 September 2010, 12:35 »
I have stripped the engine out my mk1 and have a 2l 8v bottom end to go in but my question is will the 2l gearbox and driveshafts fit or can I stick with my 1.6 gti gearbox and driveshafts mated to the 2l bottom end????

If I stick with the 1.6 gearbox and 2l bottom end whats it going to be like acceleration wise????

I did mate the two of them together and they seem to fit but its if they will actually work....

I believe it will work but not sure how strong a 1600 box will be though!??  is it a 4 speed box???

either box is fine, just depends what sort of gear ratios you want. all the 020 boxes are the same inside in terms of strength so that at least makes no difference. trouble with 2.0 box is you'll need to fit 100mm shafts from later cabby, scirocco or caddy

cheers jonny. I am sticking with the 1.6 box. Hopefully it'll help my acceleration aswell.

I see you said in the mk1 owners forum I would need to change the clutch....is that from a 1.8 8v?

you'll need a 1.8 8v clutch yeah, the 2.0 clutch has a larger spline hole so it wont fit the box.  flywheel needs to matchit too, there are 2 types on the mk3 which is a pain. whip the flywheel off and check the alignment dowels, if it has 2 then happy days it'll fit a MK1/2 1.8 clutch, if 1 you'll need to change it for a MK2 1.8 clutch.

oh and what engine management are you running it on? if mk1 k-jet you may need to make another mark on the flywheel for the timing if you use the mk3 flywheel

  • It's not the speed, it's the sudden stops...

It should out accelerate a jet fighter, then top out at about 125 on the limiter about 10 seconds later

Fuel consumption may take a hit...
