not if its a later cabby like this one, they use oil/water cooler just like MK2 GTI.  prime suspect if you have oil in your water. to confirm, remove the 2 coolant pipes from the oil cooler and bridge them together.  flush coolant system and see if oil comes back after a week or so of driving, plus oil leaking out of the oil cooler pipe connections a givaway its bust.

to get oil out of the coolant system drain the coolant by disconnecting as many pipes as you can, then flush with a hosepipe till water is clear. connect it all back up and fill with water plus a cup full of bio washing powder. run engine till hot, then allow to cool, drain and flush. repeat till oil is gone.  drive car for a week with plain water in it, see if it goes oily again after cooler is bypassed
Sorry didnt know this was a late model cab..

Aye, I had a look on the tinterweb last night and it seems later clippers etc use the same setup as the mk2 GTI.
They are known for allowing water and oil to mix.

Hope he hasn't had the head off for no reason  :lipsrsealed:

Ah dude yeah I remember doing a 306 D Turbo's heater matrix after that happened. Full of sludge and oil. Was a complete and utter pain in the backside. Quite common on the old Pug dervs wasn't it.

yeah!.... a sign of previous owners not keeping anti-freeze up to scratch in the cooling system so the oils pipe corrodes from the outside!

cheers guys :D but massive arse i may have had the head off for no reason!!!!! altho it was missfiring/jumping/knocking and shizz so i just assumed head gasket was gone :( may have been both but as i said gasket looked ok

top end rebuild me thinks, new gaskets, clean all breather pipes wish i knew which ones i could get rid of

maybe new cam seeing as its apart and port the head slightly

what engine is actually in these later cabs is it the same as the mk2 8v gti engine?

I believe the codes are different but overall the same or very similar block and they share some parts (in the 1800cc anyway).

If only I had mentioned the oil cooler before you struggled with the head, sorry
At least now it's off like you say you can clean it all up and replace some gaskets and the like.

yer its the 1800 gti 8v

so is the oil cooler water cooled instead of air cooled then, hence the problem of oil in the water
