Success!!!!!!!! :D
« on: 24 August 2010, 19:08 »
got the bloody thing out took a lot of effort and swearing and 'technical adjustment' but the head is out with the manifolds attached and after it came out it took all of 30 seconds to get that bloody bolt out and the manifolds off

not sure the manifold is standard though which may explain me having so much trouble trying to wiggle it out here is a pic, it appears to be stainless steel

only thing is the headgasket looks ok :s so why is the oil and water mixed any ideas????

Thats not standard mate, thats a proper four branch 4 into 2

not sure about the water/oil issue then, how bad is it?

may explain why we got told the exhaust system cost £600 then by the dealer we got it off

was a bargin of a car cos he took it part ex and didn't know what to do with it

its a stainless janspeed system, the manifold is in 2 parts , then theres a y piece its a very nice looking system tbh

as for the oil/water mix, it was very bad weirdly no mayo on the oil cap etc it was all in the water reservoir

Regarding the oil and water mixing...
Do the Mk1's have a similar oil cooler setup to the Mk2?

not if its a later cabby like this one, they use oil/water cooler just like MK2 GTI.  prime suspect if you have oil in your water. to confirm, remove the 2 coolant pipes from the oil cooler and bridge them together.  flush coolant system and see if oil comes back after a week or so of driving, plus oil leaking out of the oil cooler pipe connections a givaway its bust.

to get oil out of the coolant system drain the coolant by disconnecting as many pipes as you can, then flush with a hosepipe till water is clear. connect it all back up and fill with water plus a cup full of bio washing powder. run engine till hot, then allow to cool, drain and flush. repeat till oil is gone.  drive car for a week with plain water in it, see if it goes oily again after cooler is bypassed
