First let me apologise for the massive story below, I can never be very concise!

Just been for a blast in my golf, for the first time in a few weeks. All was generally fantastic and fun! Except when it would not start. I stopped to admire the scenery and turned the car off, it ran perfectly from the garage.

On trying to restart 10 minutes later, it fired up as per usual, idled high (2000 ish) as usual when its warm, dropped to normal idle, then got rough, and died (over a space of 15-20 secs). I tried turning it over a few times (interspersed with staring at the engine and head scratching) but no joy.

It seemed to be getting some fuel, and trying to start, but not firing up. With or without additional throttle. And I was cautious not to go throttle mad and flood it.

So, called RAC, wandered about a bit, then had another go after it had sat for 10-15 mins. Started straight away as normal.

So what was wrong with it?

Ive just renewed much of the cooling system, and have a new blue temp sender, but not fitted it yet as I want to do the idle and CO at the same time, and dont yet have a gun and meter.

It always idles high on start up when hot (but never then dies) which is why i bought the sensor to retune it. Will it just be needing a setup?

I'd replace the sensor to start with, then work from there. was it a gen vag one?

check the idle switch clicks when throttle is closed, and the wiring to the throttle body hasnt snapped behind the inlet. also look for vacuum leaks, the bung for the PCV on the rocker cover is a prime suspect, it likes to split right in the lip where it fits to rocker cover so really you need to take it out to check properly

Thanks RJ. Yes its a genuine sensor, I will get it fitted and re tune as per your guide.  I'll have a look over the inlet various for leaks etc.
