« on: 16 August 2010, 20:39 »
Need a new gearbox for my mk2 1.8 driver. Currently has a 8v gti box but it's shot, just wondering would it be best to replace with another 8v gti box or go for a mk3 box ? or maybe even back to the standard driver box :/ any help much appreciated

took me about 4 hours in total my first one on a golf,i found the hardest part was gettin the box out of the chassis and the front engine mount which on the 16v the starter motor bolts through be carefull if yours is like that i didnt realize and ended up busting a water pipe,if your mechanically minded u should be fine

i got mine up on axlestands and dropped it out the bottom i just had to turn the diff to the top when i removed the box and again when fitting the new one, but i got a little problem with mine now makes a weird noise when pressing the clutch but it cant be the relese bearing because they dont have one its a really wierd setup to the clutch if yours is the same type as mine its like the flywheel sits over the top of the clutch and u will need a 9mm 12sides socket to remove it.

yeah i've got an engine crane handy so it makes sense to use it not too sure about the clutch setup though. i know mine has got a release bearing because i have a reciept in my service history for a new one with the clutch
