MK1 2.0 8v turbo
« on: 08 January 2005, 11:16 »
Help needed with the car thatis!
my plan is to turbocharge my 83 mk1 GTI. I will maybe go the 20v route later in the year but i would like to do some thing different, i have a 2.0 passat for spares and was hoping to use the 2.0 bottom end and keep my head and mechanical injection i have turbo from a Saab 9000 a few intercoolers and a manifold off a TD pishrat these should fit with a bit of work my main problem is fueling/timing i could go g60 ecu or custom ecu etc. but to be different or stupid maybe! i would like to stick with what i have for now i also need to lower compresion hopefully use a shim or stack head gaskets for this my initial thoughts are up the fuel pressure run avgas or octane booster wire up cold start injector when on boost, but im sure even that wont be enough i was thinking Porsche 924/911/Audi quattro turbo injectors. Does anyone know if these give more flow. as for retarding timing when on boost i am told a dual port vacuum canister can be used but cant find one !any ideas what Porsche or Audi used on early cars
any help would be much appreciated
Cheers Chris

Hi Chris, how you doing?.
Turbo a mk1 with the k jet is a bit of a problem as the fuel and ign is not boost sensitive. Use the TD ex manifold and make a adaptor to fit a T25 or T3, fit the manifold upside down (you will see what I am getting at when you fit it) and clock the compressor and turbine housings for best fit, especially the compressor around the gear linkage. You will have to modify (bend ) the linkage to clear the comp housing, once you have the turbo fitted you will have to make up the oil pipes. I took the feed from the oil pressure port on the head using a "T" piece and fitted the TD sump and made a return pipe up. The fuel side was a nightmare and I was never happy with it, I had a pressure switch to fire the cold start injector at 5psi but the location of the injector was not ideal. Use a dual vacc distributer unit and that should help (cant comment as I did not use one). As far as I know, most of the Kjet injectors flow about the same, its the metering unit that is the limiting factor. Look into using a warm up regulator of a turbo 942 or audi for extra fuel on boost.
Good luck with your project, hope to see you at Edzell .
Steve.

Hi Steve I'm OK considering i am offshore till thursday!
how is sunny montrose?
If your going to edzell i better take the scoob if i still have it then, i only took it on once last year i managed 13.6@102.8 not bad considering i wasn't being harsh on the clutch.
I have been perusing the megasquirt site as you suggested and i may go that way but i just think if Porsche managed 177 bhp in the 924 that it must be possible to use stuff from that or as you suggest the Audi not sure how they retarded timing either will have a surf and see if i can find out more. i have considered large 4 pots N/A such as 2.5/3.0 used in the 944 but they will probably be too heavy and need a custom gearbox so again i would be as well with a 1.8T 20valver
i would like to do something with the 2.0 perhaps bore/stroke to 2.2 and turbo maybe get a cross flow 8v head from the states i realize more power can be had from a 16/20 valver but it would just be some thing a bit different with loads of low down torque.
do you know where i can find a shim to lower compression as two head gaskets wont lower it a great deal suppose i could use 3 and remove some metal from head! looking on the web on some compression calcs, if i use the 2 litre bottom end with my head it lowers the compression slightly as the 2.0 has a bigger dish in the piston apparently! i will find out next week when i split the 2.0l engine. i have 3 weeks off so should make some progress!
Thanks for all that have welcomed me to forum!
