quick starter motor question needed

Yes or No will a mk2 golf gti 16v starter motor fit, as ive got a 9a? That be a stupid question, but just worried as its arriving tuesday

depends what gearbox you have. if its an 020 rod shift then yes :)

erm lol. its just an 88 plate 16v gti so the gearbox has never been changed

You'll need to change the clutch assembly on the 9A for the one on your KR motor, as the 9A will have been hooked up to a proper box, not a rod-changer made of cheese.  The cable-box has a traditional flywheel assembly vs the a$$ about face one on the rod-changer set up.

Ok so is it best to take the starter motor back and get one for a 9a engined car then, or should i find out the code on the gearbox.

Or is it simple to change the clutch assembly?

The 9A flywheel and clutch is totally not compatible with the 020 rod change gearbox.

Fit KR clutch assembly.

Shouldn't this of been done when the conversion was done though? As the gearbox ive got i presumed was one from an 88 16v, but as thats not compatiable with the 9a, then it must be something else, or the 9a has had the kr clutch assembly done right? Why can i not send the starter motor ive got back and get on that will fit without having to get a kr clutch assembly.

020 gearbox will fit the 9a, if you use a MK2 clutch and flywheel. this would have been done as part of the conversion.

basically, if the gearbox is the 020 rod change type then the 16v mk2 starter will fit :)

compare your gearbox linkages to this pic, if it looks like this then its an 020 box:

All done :D wasnt hard at all, i didnt end up taken out the crossmember, as the lack of space wasnt as time consuming as trying to get off the bolts on the crossmember!!

It started first time, it was smaller than the old one though and the terminals just about went onto the postive!.

Annoyling the oil buzzer is on, is this because i only jacked up one side for about an hour?.

And yer mine looks like that rubjonny.!
