Upgrade to mk3 sump gasket
« on: 14 July 2010, 11:56 »
Sure i remember reading that if you use the mk3 rubber sump gasket you need to get new sump bolts as the mk2 ones aren't long enough. Have tried searching but can't find anything so have to ask again.
Also, if i have to get new ones does anyone know what size/length they need to be?

Cheers
Steve

and it's an 88 8v, not sure if that makes any difference this this q

What's the benefit of a mk3 sump gasket?

iirc the mk3 1.9 td sump has a windage try built into it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would have thought the original bolts would have done the job so long as they nip up tight and don't let oil out?

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

MK3 is metal/rubber - IIRC the MK2 is cork.

You can happily use original bolts when using the MK3 sump gasket. You are thinking of the rocker cover gasket, where you need to swap the studs for bolts - due to the stud shoulders (or you can be a pikey like me and remove the studs, put nuts on them, and use them like bolts :)

Cool, less to buy then. Anyone got anything to say against GSF gaskets?

the bolts are longer on cars with rubber sumps as std, but as above most peeps have used their old bolts without issue. abf has allen bolts as std, good idea as it makes refitting the fiddly ones next to the sump a bit easier

N   900 084 01 - cork gasket bolt, m6x14 - 1.28+VAT
N   904 234 02 - rubber gasket bolt, M6x17 - 0.68+VAT
N   100 801 05 - ABF sump bolt, M6x25 - 0.22+VAT

They supply Elring - which is recommended (might even have a VW stamp on it).

I used a rubber rocker cover one on my 8v and it leaked constantly! Was from GSF - Swapped it ack for a cork one and has been fine since - Replaced the studs for stainless allen bolts and had no problems, just tightened it on opposite sides etc!

Sounds like it was mis-fitted, the rubber/metal gasket is an improvement on crappy corklyness.
