Would you do it again?
« on: 07 July 2010, 02:06 »
This is a topic for people who have had their Golf performance models for a wee while...

If you could go back to the point of ordering your car, would you do anything differently?

e.g. would you wait and get an R? would you get a different colour? would you get dsg? etc

For this to work smoothly please specify what you have just now and what you would keep/change

I'll start it off...

I'd stick with a GTI. Yes the diesel is more economical and probably better on the motorway but the GTI is the model I wanted.
I would get DSG again. Yes I dislike it sometimes as it can be jerky and it can also be dull but the GTI was one of the few cars to get it and it feels quite special. I also love Launch control sometimes
Tornado Red This is tough. I got it because a) it was available, b) the interior matched (the stiching) and c) looked the business. But it is prone to showing swirl marks and I am dreading it will fade. Quite possibly silver next time or maybe even white.

The other thing I would add is a sunroof. Didn't have the option on my car as it was a showroom model but I really miss it.

I might also add that this week almost saw me part with the GTI. I had taken a hankering to go back to a MINI. Then someone phoned offering me the price I wanted for the GTI. I surprised myself by saying no. Suddenly I began to realise all the things the GTI did quietly - the seats are comfy, exhausts are nice but not too loud, car is practical, it has a sunglasses holder (which I like) and it has lots of cubby holes. I think I have fallen back in love with my GTI - and it took almost losing it to realise this.

GTI, Manual, Tornado Red, Sunroof, Xenons, RNS, Dynaudio, 18" wheels (replaced with VWR 19" wheels), Park Assist (with camera and sensors F & R), Storage & Winter packs, folding mirrors, ACC.

No, I doubt I'd change the spec - I would still fit the RNS myself and save £1000....I may have ordered it with 17" wheels since I've never used them, and had my 19s sitting...at one point I fancied Silver...but upon reflection, No, I'd order the same all over again.
I had 8 months wait for it, 6+ of which I could have changed the spec, but didn't.
I had the chance to swap to an R...chose not to.
I knew exactly what I wanted when I ordered it.
I still wouldn't order DSG.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Unfortunately we have no choice of Golf R in the horizon, so therefore I would HAVE to stick to GTI.
I would DEFINITELY get a 5 door instead of 3.
I would stick to 6MT.
I would get Leather upholstery.
I would stick to CW, once again, we do not get many selections as you do across the World.

Quite amusing I too came close to binning mine last week and got offered 22.5k which was what I wanted, but when it came to the thought of not having it on my drive I changed my mind, Had a Cooper S before this and the could never go back to those seats.

Nov 2009 (59)
3 door   GTI
White
18's
DSG
Winter pack
6k miles

Wish I had added Dyna-audio, love the DSG to bits but would probobly love the £1300 in my bank account more so wouldn't spec again. Would order grey as i'm now pissed off with cleaning it every 5 mins.
2019 MK7.5 GTi PP, 3dr, DSG, Indium Grey, Heated screen, Pan roof, 90% tints.

Tornado 5 door, manual, cloth, winter pack, rcd510, fiscon, 18' shadows, Revo.

This was a stock car in Germany and I didn't want to wait so just took it. Originally it had a rcd310 which looked awful so I upgraded to the 510 and added the fiscon.

I would order the same again but maybe with xenons if i had the choice as I do a lot of driving on back roads at night. Wouldn't get DSG as I had it before in a Scirocco and thought it was OK but would never pay the huge premium for it. Colour wise I wouldn't mind a metallic like the grey but don't like the red accents on that colour so I guess i'd have red again.

Wouldn't get leather, had it in the scirocco and didn't like it at all, MUCH Prefer the cloth. Couldn't live without the heated seats in winter.

I love the car, I really do, it does everything. I will however consider an R as a possible next car but need to have a good drive in one first.

See my signature - would not change anything at all and I have cloth, RCD310, manual and no xenons !

Car is simply fanatastic, so glad I did not go down the GTD route as I would always be regretting it.

It is a company car as well ( not all company car drivers go the diesel route ). I will make the leasing company an offer in 2 years time as this one is a keeper.

Needs more traction though, maybe the Michelin PS3's would be better.

Would love to try an R to compare.
Mk6 GTi - returned to leasing company after 3 great years and replaced with :

Mk5 GTi - Edition 30 - Revo 1 and some tweaks - 310 bhp. Its a better car than the Mk6  - Now sold and replaced with :

Mk6 R - Rising Blue 5 Door. Won't be standard 270bhp for long

Family Car : Mercedes ML420 with 360 bhp
Looking at Porsche Macan as replacement

I wouldnt spec ACC and I would have got a sunroof for my GTI.

I wouldnt buy a GTD in a month of sundays and the R is too bland.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

GTD - I wouldn't swap to a GTI (just for you VWKev)

Dynaudio/reversing camera/xenons/cruise control - all well worth the money and I would re-order these
Leather - I would maybe order cloth (the seat is wearing badly but VW say it is not warranty which I am not impressed with)
Sunroof - I don't have one but I would get one if I re-ordered without leather

I don't have ACC/DSG or satnav but I would still order without these.
I love my GTD
