I have found RUST! HELP!!!!!
« on: 15 June 2010, 19:44 »
As the title says I have found rust. It is on the upper edge of each front wheel arch.

I have no idea what to do, is it just a case of grinding it down, filling, smoothing and painting, or will I need new arches?

Here are some pics.

The first one is of the passenger wheel arch, where the paint is only bubbling slightly.

The last 3 are of the driver’s side arch, and as you can see it is a lot worse.

Excuse the water marks I haven't had a chance to clean the car since the weekend.

Mrk V, GTI, 3dr, DSG, heated seats, winter pack, cruise control, rear parking sensors and now thanks to GizzyWizzy and SteveP in the MK6 section a RCD 510. Awesome!

VW have a 12 Year paint and body corrosion so take it to your nearest dealership and go from there. But i'm very surprised on an 05 car.

Quote
Body protection warranty
All current Volkswagen vehicles are fully protected during manufacture against through corrosion for 12 years from the date of first registration (6 years for the Sharan models).
The only preconditions are:
The defect must be reported to a member of the Volkswagen Authorised Network as soon as it is discovered and within the warranty period.
The perforation must not have been caused originally by damage, neglect, insufficient care or maintenance or by external rusting.
A member of the Volkswagen Authorised Network must be advised about any rusting as soon as it is found.
All body repairs will be carried out promptly in accordance with the manufacturer's specification and procedures, using only approved parts and materials, so the original level of anti-corrosion protection is maintained.

Oh f*cking ace, thanks mate, that has cheered me up no end. Will ring the VW dealer tomorrow. Have you got the link of where you got that quote just in case the dealer tries to pull a fast one on me?

I know I have never had rust on a car before, and I have had an old style corsa, which were basically built out of rust ha ha!

Watch out here.... the warranty specifically says "through corrosion" meaning corrosion right through the panel. I would say this is more likely classified as surface corrosion caused by a stone chip or similar.

Dubbin has this bang on point, heard of people in the past been refused as the corrosion was not a hole etc.

Do you think the car has had some paint missing for quite some time for this to happen, still shocked by the pics
