Try using an extension bar for a socket set against your ear and then the engine that should help isolate the noise and figure out where it's coming from. I suspect it'll be something silly and not nasty.

well I was in a rush yesterday and we had friends over... have just had another look at the old girl

I'm not 100% but I pretty sure that the alternator pulley shouldn't look like this  :lipsrsealed:

Told you it wouldn't be horrid. Not sure if these use the idler type pulleys or not, if so I have the tool to remove and refit.

right.. thats the old alternator off... now a quick trip to see a man who can to fit a new free wheel and get a new belt and pop it all back together!

Lol just replied to your PM.

If you're getting it sorted just remember when you pop it back together not to over tighten the belt as it'll put extra stress on the new pulley.
