Dave - see my post above, this link : www.puravent.co.uk gives you an idea as to what you're in need of and a rough guide to fitment (click on the car pollen filter tab obviously !).

Awesome thanks everyone for your help. Fingers crossed this gets rid of the smell.

Just need to know if anyone can help with the peeling paddles. I think you can get extenders that stick on over the originals but I’m not sure where you get them from. Ive tried Google but no luck????

as a cheap fix you can try an air con cleaner.  I've actually got one in my boot but I've not got round to using it yet.  Basically you stick aircon on full whack, leave aerosol in car pointed at vents and it discharges through system and in theory kills all the bacteria and smells etc.  Im yet to use and cant remember the exact type but its something along the lines of ...

Tesco and Aldi were selling them a while back for about £4

I have already used the exact same stuff on that link and it didn't make much of a difference. Was ok for a while but the smell came back. I don't know if this means anything, but the smell is worse if I turn the air con off and just have the blowers on LO????

Right I got the pollen filter out last night and it didn’t smell bad and wasn't wet or anything? I have ordered the upgrade one from puravent.co.uk but I doubt that is going to help with the smell.

I also took out the passenger and driver side air vents and had a look and smell inside the holes. I could smell something but I couldn’t see anything that could be causing the problem???? And I certainly didn’t see any dead rats ha ha!

I’m really stumped and it is driving me mad. It is really bad when you have the blowers on the Lo temp, but the air con off. When you turn the air con on it kinda goes away. This is all well and good during summer, but come winter I will freeze coz I don’t think my heated seats alone will be of much use. Also the extra fuel consumption is gonna suck.

Be really good if anyone has any other advice, or should I take it to the dealers? The car is still under warranty so if anything needs changing or whatever it should be free.

Im having the same problem with my Air-Con. It stinks for about 3-4 mins as soon as i switch the engine on, (the recent blast of hot weather is forcing me to leave the air-con on LO!) but when the car warms up the smell goes and it works well.

Was there any success in the new pollen filter?

If so i'll get one on order straight away, the smell makes me feel sick when i get in!

Hi mate, no the pollen filter did not work and nether did the can of that bacteria killing spray that you leave in the car for 10 minutes whilst the air con circulates. I have taken it to the dealers and they sprayed a can of the stuff around the car too but still no luck. It is fine when the air con is on and cold, but as soon as you turn it off the smell comes back.

I asked the guy at the dealers what it could be, and he said there is a small over flow tank inside the dash that is something to do with the air con. He said this can go mouldy and can cause the smell. So I asked is there a way of cleaning this and he said, the only way is to clean it is spray that bacteria killing spray, because to get to it you need to remove the whole dash. Can someone tell me if this is true?

That sounds like a nightmare! I wonder if it might have something to do with it needing a re-gas? The guy who did it on my previous Alfa 156 told me it should be done every 2-3 years. The air-con is really cold but i cant deal with the smell! It smells like ammonia or something!
