the general rule though is slicks need a cage, as you mentioned

my r888's are looking very worn, i was gonna keep the fronts on the front and wear out 2 at a time, but now the prices have gone up im gonna run them backwards on opposite corners for combe, wear them all out and look for a different tyre

Has anyone looked at or tried or read any reviews on the new Toyo R1R's (semi trackday tyre)

They look good but not a lot cheaper than r888's, so i don't really see the point. They look like they will be a bit better in the wet though

as marshalls do get upset with you overtaking in corners and thats where the syncro make's most ground and if allowed would overtake most stuff.   so thinking if i have  less grip i'll be slower but maybe more fun

It's totally dependent on the track, nothing to do with the organisers.  Goodwood are epically anal, Combe are reasonably keen too - both on Richard's events.  At Combe you won't get on track without your noise test sticker and you'll only get that by going through the noise-test shed and talking to the old duffers.

T1-Rs are OK unless it's searingly hot.  Under normal conditions you'll roll rubber off the tyres, if it's proper hot they'll go off halfway through a session, leaving you wondering where all your grip went.

As I understand it there have been some issues with the early R1-Rs.  We're likely to see more of their ilk in the future, as there's talk about 'track day tyres' being legislated off the market.  Understandable given their standing water performance.

Silverstone decided not to bother and were only going to throw anyone off if they failed the drivebay ones they have out on circuit.

Just dug out my invoice from Tyretraders dated Feb 2010, i bought x4 R888 in 195/50/15 for £247 del which works out at £61.75 each inc del !!! What a deal that was Did a trackday 2 weeks ago & now my n/s/f tyre is illegal but the problem i have is i don't have a spare set of wheels with road tyres yet as theirs loads more wear left in the tyre for trackdays.

Wha compound where they? You shouldn't kill one in a day on a Golf unless your tracking is badly out like mine was.

Yes the tracking is out, i had the whole front end in bits to renew bushes,coilovers,weld wishbones,trackrod end,driveshaft gaitors etc etc & have not had any alignment done yet :huh:because i have to remove a faulty strut/coilover again 1st & sort that before alignment, i think its toeing out by the looks of it. They were SG compound too so won't last as long, the other 3 tyres are ok, o/s tyres have hardly any wear.

Doubly whammy then! I've been told a pair of SG fronts will only last one or two trackdays at best. I got 3 out of my front GG's and they'd also done the ring and several other trackdays in the hands of the last owner. One of them still has 50% tread but the outside one is dead as like you I ran with the tracking not set correctly.
