well i have started to spend money.

new engine mounts are here and just ordered the brackets and what not to convert the 02a gearbox to operate on a cable clutch rather than hydraulic.

when looking over the engine we noticed a split pipe that is part of the turbo system so ordered one of those too.

i have spent a few evenings this week cleaning and painting the engine bay so it looks a little neater

mounts and engine are going in on saturday all being well

thought i would share a bit of info for anyone else wanting to do this conversion

I am using a 02a gearbox with this conversion, mainly because it is what the engine came with but after a bit of research it would seem it is a popular choice. From what i can fathom the main source is the 16valve seat ibiza.  The clutch operation is hydraulic in these so you either convert the car to hydraulic, or the box to manual.  I am wanting the car to be as much mk2 as possible so i have opted to stick with a cable.  the parts i bought for the job are...

02b141708a bracket  £62.65 - this bolts to the box and includes the rod that operates the release bearing
02a141728 boot £6.65 not needed as the above part number comes with the biit fitted
357199356 support £38.35  Needed to give the clutch cable a cable stop so it can operate
sn10241605, sn10155207, no195324 nut bolt screw for mounting the suppurt.

i will upload pics of the parts in sutu when they get fitted.

clutch and flywheel are g60 golf items.

Engine mounts are standard mk2 golf gti ones. i intend to replace them with more robust ones next year when the car is going to get a power hike and lsd.

the ECU

I am using a standard ECU.  Sadly the loom didnt come with an OBD port but we are looking into wiring one in, not investigated that too far yet though.  The ECU is currently at map-tech in my home town of Brigg in North Lincolnshire.  Gareth is going to remove the immobiliser from the software so that i dont need to run 20vt clocks or ignition.  While he has the ECU apart he is also going to upload a fairly standard stage 2 map. This will be replaced in a few months when we can get some time on the rollers together and give it a custom map.

Gareth has agreed to let me take some pictures of the ECU fettling to show what is involved

well that was a waste of a weekend. vorious issues have meant slow progress on the engine.

the cable clutch parts have been fitted, the engine and box are together for the first time, albeit with just 2 bolts.  The new mounts are bolted into the car and we have gone through the loom and connected everything up to the engine.  sadly we were missing most of the gearbox bolts plus the starter motor bolts so the engine is sat on the crane still. bolts are now sourced though

Slow slow progress.

Starter bolts are doing my head in. The block and motor require m12 bolts but the box is only drilled to 10mm. I removed it last night and it is off to a local engineering company today to be drilled out.

Exhaust, downpipe, intetcooler, maf, throttle pedal, slimline fan are all sourced and inbound.

Hoping for some tangible progress this weekend...

gearbox is back and the holes have been opened out, bolted it back onto the block and offered the engine into the bay.

having a few issues with the gearbox mount but i am going to get the frontmount sorted forst then see where we are at the box end.

feels like progress has been made

Hi mate,

Looks like the project is going well.

Wonder if you could help with the part number for the 20vt Starter Motor BOLTS part number.

Cant find them bolts anywhere, I got a ARZ Code 1.8 20VT from a Golf MK4 2001.

Hi unfortunately not at the moment but I do know there are several listed. I tried to order some from Tps and they couldn't really help unless I could give them the dimensions. I know mine are m12 but I have yet to order. I will let you know the part number of mine when I get them.
