16v cutting out ????
« on: 06 December 2004, 19:17 »
My 16v, with only 75k, has a sad habit of cutting out when coming up to a junction. Foot on clutch, ignition lights come on, engine cuts out. Unfortunately, its intermittant, and feels as if I could get the clutch down further, it wouldn't cut out, but I know the clutch is self adjusting properly. Its just been serviced (professionally), which unfortunately has not made a difference. I've tried using injector cleaner etc, but to no avail..... I'm desperate to sort it out, as its hacking off ownership of what is a great car.? Any suggestion please ??????

had exactly the same thing.

it was either the injectors or the lift pump that eventually fixed it. its probably worth changing the fuel filter as well.

we weren't sure what it was on my valver but it cured it. plus i gained a lot of power. which was nice.

i dont think the parts cost that much. use the bosch injector and not the VAG part though. they are identical, but one costs a lot less.

superb page.

i used bosch rather than VAG as the fuel system on a 16v is made by bosch in the first place. not like you can wrong really.

Gambit said,
"Its a common problem. just need setting up correctly."

Sorry for my ignorance, but what do you mean by that? Isn't? the whole engine/fuel management electronic and supposed to do that. If not how/where do I get it "set up correctly?"

Many thanks for the advice so far folks.

the 16v is mechanical fuel injection, it doesnt have an ecu. the base settings like idle timing co2 etc need to be right for it to work properly.

replied to your PM

a 16v does have an ECU  but it only concerns advancing the ignition timing

Mine does the stalling thing - only when it's been sitting in traffic for a while - and then it'll stall every time I slow down - I counted thirty times in a half mile journey home - not fun.

Could someone hazard a guess at the issue here - my car's done a good 100k miles - sadly it doesnt get opened up that often, lots of short journeys.
