Golf GTi DSG common issues ??
« on: 08 May 2010, 19:46 »
Hey

I am thinking of getting myself one of these, although what I havn't always done in the past is sign up to a forum and ask for common issues with certain cars. Hence my last unfortunate ST220 :( It was a 2002 on a 52 and common issues were things like dual mass flywheel loosing teeth amougst things, a certain breather pipe, rubbish brakes (although not really too much of an issue, so just change them) and a few other things.
Like on my ford I wasnt going to mod it at all, but then started on brakes, was going to get it remapped etc ..... but having liked to own my first petrol turbo'd motor I will definately be wanting to get it remapped professionally, perhaps uprating brakes depending how I feel they are, exhaust too as the gti dsg i test drove I thought sounded very plasid and quiet.

I did see a picture of a carbon fibre air intake on a thread from REDROBIN and I was like I AM SOO GETTING ONE OF THOSE !! lol

I am thinking of a 2006 - 2008 model DSG, 5 door in the dark blue or metallic black so any advice on things to definately look out for would be greatly appriciated :)

Thanks a bunch

Gearbox service history is an absolute must.

Also - watch for a 'lurch' forward from stationary. This is likely to mean that the 'mechatronic' unit is bust. Should be replaced under warranty.

Other than that - not aware of anything.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, I did say I was going to get done despite whether it needs doing or not would be a DSG oil & filter change. I can do most things myself but having know erm NOTHING about how to repair this system. It's probably best to get it done by a decent VW dealer.(despite me NEVER going to a dealer for anything as they are rip of merchants) .... BAH customer service my ass !!

How often are things things needing a service, does it have a cambelt ? (if so when does this need changing) or a camchain.

I would imagine the gearbox service history you mean to make sure it has a FSH ? and that it has had DSG oil and filter changes in the past ? Thinking about it, how often does this need doing ?

Actually infact lol is there a service schedule/interval's list online for EVERYthing that needs doing at a specific mileage/age ?? for this thing

DSG boxes are pretty reliable if looked after, oil and filter change required every 40 K. The job is complex so not something you can DIY.
Brakes are good for street use and can shed the speed of a standard car nicely.

Welcome to the forum Mazza

The DSG gearbox has proven to be a fairly robust one although there are issues that can arise from the mechatronics unit. these are....

Kangarooing at low speed/revs.
Harsh change up in 1st and second.
Harsh change from neutral to reverse.
stalling.

Most DSG's with full service history will have had the faults rectified by the time they are 2yrs old, but it is still something to look out for just in case.

The car does run off a cambelt and this needs to be replaced at 60k miles. The cambelt should be replaced along with the water pump and the tensioner as these are also items that tend to wear.

For more general info look in the link below.

Spot on peeps, thanks

Will now compile all this and then doing usual checks then I eventually go out and get one, hopefully within a few months

Also found something else on the fourm about faulty steering racks on ones manufactured SEPT, OCT, NOV, DEC on the MK5, I also read that there was a recall on article http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=32092.0

Should this be something I need to worry about, like not purchasing one unless its had it done or ? although the last post on that thread was back in 2006 ? lol

Thanks :)

You'll be able to tell if it has the steering rack issue as it is quite loud when turning lock to lock. If it is there, but still in warranty then it shouldn't be too much of an issue (bargaining chip!), but if it is out of warranty, either avoid or have a damn good chunk taken off the price.
