2002 GTI T - 2 second whine when starting from cold

Hi,
Im new, very new.
Bought a 2002 Golf GTI T and i have a question.
When starting the car from cold there is a whine coming from the engine, lasts about 1-2 seconds and then we are fine.
No noise when starting the car from warm.

Im just trying to narrow down the areas where i could be having a problem to start with.

Any help is great

Possibly the starter motor. Common problem.

If it sound like a screech then its your starter motor.
Get the grease out.

could be your air con pump/compressor thingy if it has air con.my old fiesta did this

mate as Adam said its the starter motor mine had the same problem till i changed it
