Fallout from the Icelandic Volcano
« on: 22 April 2010, 21:15 »
Hi guys

My car is covered in a layer of dirty gritty dark grey ash, yeah I know my car is black and it shouldn't show but it does and it looks and feels really gross.

I don't have access to a hose pipe and it would be a nightmare to wash it out in the street so if I go to the carwash should I ask him to give it a doing with the Karcher first? worried about the bristley brushes scratching the muck into my paint work otherwise.

Get it hosed and hosed and hosed down with plenty of water with a jet wash and by hand. No auto car wash. Then touch the surface to check there is no grit. Only after this, you can soap and sponge Bonnie.
It really is a ridiculous situation. One guy on my street has a white 3 series which he has had badly washed and it is full of very fine scratches which are very visible under street lights. Needless to say, he is very peeved off.

Take care.

I can't believe you are even thinking of going through one of them brillo washes  you've just spent X amount of money on a new car and your going to ruin it by going through an auto wash

Its cheaper and more satisfying doing it yourself

I had to wash mine again tonight for the 2nd time this week and its only Thursday. To be honest there shouldnt be any grit as such, its just fine powder.

Well yeah I think it is ash mixed with general road grit to be honest, but it looks a bloody awful mess

Prolly looks as bad on a white car as it does on the black of my Bonnie.

BTW: I alerted members about this volcanic eruption when it first happened. But my post was unceremoniously moved!

I know but I don't have a drive to wash it on, I live in a terraced house on the main A road into Whitby with no access to a hose pipe, so my only choice is the car wash but I will take it to the machines where you DIY and hopefully I'll make a good job of it.

Gizzy dearest: Take it to your VW dealership, if it is conveniently close, as they must have a hand wash facility. You might have to book in advance, but worth it.
