starter problems i think
« on: 21 November 2004, 15:34 »
My car will not start, when i turn the igniton over the starter motor just click really loudly and the electrics flash on and off with the clicking noise (the alarm resets and the mfa, so power to everything is being interupted), the car does not turn over at all! does this mean my starter motor has gone?

All connection to the starter are solid and the battery is good!

Any suggestions, really need it for work tommorrow!

Thanks

It could be the starter motor solenoid draining power as i had this once.

tried rocking the car when its in gear?...used to work for me or some people just tap the starter with a hammer ;D

Cheers Blue, just tried both, but it's still the same, should the starter make that loud clicking noise? And why does it interupt the power to everything else?

Any ideas

try putting it in reverse and pushing it back a few yards. this should make the solenoid become unstuck.

Ok mate i'll try it :)

If it does become unstuck, does this mean my starter is on it's way out? should i change it?

Thanks

clean it and wd40 would be a cheap trick to try and get you by in the short term, but i suppose new unit would be long term option

Like Blue mk2 said if you tap the solenoid then it will start if someone turning the key, i changed a solenoid 2 weeks ago and realised that the problem was coming from one off the female connector from the alternator which recharges the battery, the cables had stretched and one of the cables had popped out of the connector, a sparky told me to change the connector as it is not charging the battery the correct way. so check them but i changed the solenoid for peace of mind and no complaints since then :)

There are two cables from the alternator, one big red power lead which is live all the time and there is a small blue one, not sure what this does!

There are three cables on the starter, these seem fine, but i'll check them also

thanks

Deefadog,

Trying turning the ingnition on, pop the bonnet and take the plug off the live (I think its the live one anyway, its the plug on the top towards the back) and then taking a piece of wire from the live on the battery to this plug, this hopefully will start her.

I used to have a dodgy starter motor which most the time used to start but every so ofter would not (usally after a day at work, very embarassing out in the works car park...!) I replaced it and all was sorted until last Friday when it started happening again, so I was out in the works car park tonite wiv my piece of wire.... >:(
