Wheel Spacers
« on: 25 March 2010, 16:52 »
Hi guys, thinking about wheel spacers for my GTI...

never thought about spacers before and wanted to check if there were any probs I should know about. I have read that wheel balance may be and isssue... I can understand that.

Is there anything else? Are my wheels at increased risk of falling fall?

oh also forgot to ask... and this probs seems real stupid. but does the amount of spacer (ie 20mm) directly correspond with how much further your wheel will sit out?

Yeah, you'll get a direct 'movement' of the wheel out wards by whatever thickness of spacer you put on. I'd say go hubcentric though, that way the wheel sits on its spigot part, the bolts tightening it in to the whole assembly, those spacers that don't have the spigot locator (as hubcentric do) rely on the wheel nuts to then take the weight of the wheel (depending on how much you've spaced them out by). I've been told by most wheel centres that anything over 5mm needs longer bolts, ideally a full 5 turns of the wheel nuts into the hub if you retain your existing wheel nuts. Hope that helps some.

I would say anything more than 3mm get longer bolts

Anything more than 5mm, needs to hubcentric and have longer bolts.
