I'm not knocking toughseal as such as I have no experience of it but "Never wax again" is basically snakeoil.
If they are making absurd promises like that then I would also have to question their product, sorry.

My bonnet is a disgrace after having only covered 5000 odd miles. It looks like it has been shot blasted. But then I've always thought 70 was a rather slow pace

You demon.
Age wise or speed wise?
Either one is plain wrong!
Seriously: It would drive me insane to have numerous stone chips. Our roads are really terrible and modern day paints are waterbased and too soft.
Keeps the paintshops in business though.

Unless toughseal issome form of bullet proof paint then its snake oil - if you are doing 70mph (ahem) ont he motorway and a stone is thrown up by the vehicle in front then any paint is going to get hammered. No carnauba or polymer wax/seal is going to make diddly squat difference.

Metallics have a clearcoat so you do have a chance that a stone chip may only be in the clearcoat and not damage or chip the colour coat.  All colours use white primer/surfacer these days so the darker the colour the worse any chip through to the primer will be.

The Auto Express test car could have been the worst one on VWs fleet, i can't see how they can associate the poor state of their car being due to its red or flat paint.

For what its worth mine has one chip on the bonnet after 3500 miles, and a loads of micro indents on the painted bumper where debris has marked but not chipped the plastic.  If i only have 20 chips on the bonnet after 70k miles i'll be well impressed !

My Tornado Mk6 is covered in stone chips. Not impressed.

Too much tailgating Gossa???

Also red shows up the prim coat underneath which looks awfull esp on red . Thats why auto express is showing up to much scratches on there car, also they have proberley raggged the car to death???

Toughseal or any other paint protector/sealant cannot protect against flying debris like stones etc.
What it does do is protect the paint against UV light and acid rain. It also gives real depth to the colour. In addition, there is also less need to polish the car. As I have never washed or polished a car, this might be beneficial towards my ownership.
I compared my just delivered (today!) Red GTi today to another new one at my local VW dealer. The dealer remarked that the paint on my car looked 'deeper and more impressive'!  His words, not mine.
Tornado Red looks very good, but I still think a Candy White GTi is the best colour.

In this weeks Auto Express mag there is an indepth report on what it's like to live with the GTD.

The report is very much in favour of the GTD but what is not so good is:

"the red paint of our test car adds to its racy looks - but it comes at a cost.  Yes, you save £430 by opting for a solid shade, but metallic finishes have a strong lacquer that makes them very hard wearing.  And the soft paintwork on our Golf is already stone chipped in places".

Their car has done 2496 miles.

Gizzy

Quite interesting this as I drove VW's for years. One thing that always bothered me was the stone chips on the paint work even metallic.
When I left VW for another make I had no where near the amount of stone chips I had on my VW's.
Certainly metallic receives three more coats of paint and a lacquer over solid paint, as I wrote even my metallic paint on VW's chipped easy

Does this also mean that all white people should be faster than coloured people?
