Smokey runner
« on: 21 March 2010, 12:01 »
Hi all, ive read through all the "my car is smoking" threads but im a bit pickled. My car has been a bit smokey for a while now, smokier than a few months ago so it has gradually got worse. Ive changed the air / fuel filter, replaced the MAF with a genuine new part with no difference. It gives a big poof of greyish black on startup (never used to) and smokes as soon as i start accelerating, even if its not harshly driven.

When R-tech remapped my car the other week they said check your EGR because theres a bit of leakage... after reading on here i expected it to be caked with gunk, i took it off yesterday (how i never killed myself i dont know, those bolts are a nightmare) but to be honest the egr and inlet manifold were.... fairly clean... nor more than maybe a few mm of soot!

What gunk was in the EGR was faily liquid though, kind of like thin, milky oil...
Does this indicate anything? i want her to run cleaner but im a bit confused now

many thanks

doesn't sound like anything to worry about

it will run a bit more smokey simply because you've increased the amount of fuel etc being used to extract the extra power

Fair comment about extra fuel = extra pollution, but it started before the remap.. i know diesels smoke.... it just seems to have doubled from what it was..

try changing the fuel filter and cleaning out the intercooler.

I find with mine it does breathe quite heavily

Yeh im curious about my intercooler... i took my bumper off yesterday to check it but didnt go any further, im wondering how do i access the top hose? I didnt wanna start unmounting it unless i knew how to get the top hose off, it seems inaccessable at the moment

Top hose??   The black one that runs from the EGR to the top of the intercooler?? Just pull off your engine cover

Lol, maybe im missing the obvious, but where it connects to the top of the intercooler it seems to just go underneath a pile of hoses and the headlight and dissappear?

See, this is why i hate myself sometimes, because when you put it like that, it all makes sense. To be fair though, i wasnt thinking straight after 8 hours getting my EGR valve off and (eventually) back on.
And im sure somebody will laugh at me for this lol.... but those bolts... in that awkward place... oh god the flashbacks...
