OMG!!!... another matte black posted within a week!... exactly what i want to do and exactly what my missus doesnt want me to do! Awesome work.. Saw 6foot6's golf done and that looks great considering how and where it was done.... What was your method and what did you use?  I also love wella steelies but cant afford what i want....

As far as method goes, we just took off the top layer of laquer with 400 grit, and then rattle canned it, two coats.
It was black before so I'm not sure if thats why is such an even finish, but I love the way it catches the colours around it, and the fact its NOT shiny :D

So no primer, makes sense i suppose if most of the black was still intact without laquer... did you have to sand it after to get an even finish... also, what paint did you use?... sorry for all the questions but i planned to do this some time ago and seeing a couple of peeps do it before me has helped me a great deal!

Thats cool bud, yeah most of the black paint was in tact, there were lots patches that had to be sanded down more because of deep scratches / rust, but two coats covered it well enough. No sanding after the satin went on, its rough to touch but looks kinda sheeny (not sure if I just made that word up, lol). We just used tradesmen satin black aerosol. Pretty cheap that way too!

same with mine, in the 5 years it was locked up it took a few knocks so gonna have to do some filling and scratch removal too.  what did it cost you in total?

i did a hell of a lot reading last night on this, mostly on yank sites about home satin paint jobs... lots of pro painters are saying that you will not get the finish you want and because there's no semi-gloss involved the car cannot be waxed and when it rains you will get staining from water marks etc!.... yet people who have done the job themselves say they've had no issues after a few months... i did see some bad jobs though.. its seems the paint of choice over there is rustoleum satin which is their version of hammerite.  you'll have to let us now how you get on keeping it clean and how it weathers.

Nice read!

Car looks really good mate, i love the satin/matt look, makes the car look soooo smooth, done a good job with the cans too.

I  plan to do some satin parts on my new golf, but not the whole thing, heres a pics of my prevoius matt black car:

i found with matt black, after a few washs the over spray gets washed off and just leaves behind a smooth finish, as long as the prep work has been done wel and you've put on enought paint then there shouldnt be a problem

just for the record i just used some matt black rattle cans from halfords << no fancy stuff here

your scort looks cool....  love the white tyre writing. mine might suit that!... thanks for the tips.  I bought a tin of satin from halfrauds just to see what its like.. nice finish but its expensive!... like the fact that dubcheryl did it all in tradesmans paint!
