Why do i love my mk3
« on: 13 March 2010, 21:53 »
Hi all,
I thought I would type a thread that did not involve asking for advice on a problem with my car, although it certainly has had some problems in the short time I have owned it.  I have owned it since November 09.

To be honest I bought my mk3 8v GTi without any research, and without any real knowledge of Golf's or VW.  My daily driver was my workhorse Fiat Ducato LWB van, which I bought from brand new, I needed a van for my job.  I changed jobs and no longer needed the van.  So I sold it.
Normally I really enjoy the 'buying a car process'.  However once I sold my van, I just could not get excited about buying a car, I know this might sound strange, I really loved my van, maybe it was because it was the first brand new vehicle I have ever owned, and it was only three years old when I sold it.
I really could not decide what car I wanted, and really could not be bothered to go out looking for a car.
I looked a second hand Merc 180 sport, drove it and hated it.  Then I saw a red Golf mk3 GTi for sale at a local dealers, it was in great condition with a good history, it did have 160k on the clock, and was £999.  So I thought that will do me, like I said I knew nothing about Golf's, I just saw it, and thought it looks nice, so that will do.  However when I asked the dealer if I could take it for a drive he said NO, his words were "I am closing in 15 minutes". I was a bit shocked, I had a grand in my pocket which I showed him, I said if it drives nice I will buy it.  He still said NO!!!!

So that was that, then on the way home I saw another one in Dragon Green with less milage and the same price.  So I took that for a drive, liked it and bought it, for £900.

Again I it bought because I needed a car, I was not excited about owning a Golf GTi, it was just a car.  But the more I drove it the more I started to like it, in fact I started to love it!!  Now I know it's not fast, I have owned fast cars, my favorite being my Toyota Supra, which I still dearly miss!
But the more time I spend with the Golf the more I like it.  I now like everything VW, I now even like the original beetles, which I used to loath.  I can't stop looking at VW's when I am out and about.  My wife now owns a stunning Mk3 GL in a gorgeous condition.  We bought this for her when she wrote of her 02 plate Mondeo.

I now want to clean our Golf's like I've never cleaned cars before, I can't get off this web site either.  Like I mentioned earlier I loved my Supra, but I was no where near as obsessed with that as I am the Golf, and my Golf has caused me problems, where my Supra never caused me problems.  Yet I am totally engrossed with anything Golf related.

So my question is, WHY? Why has this happened, I went out and bought a car with no preconceptions, no knowledge and no real interest in VW.  So why, why do I love it so much???!!!!

Sorry for the long thread, and well done for reading it all!!

All vehicles have their problems, more or less so depending on how well they've been serviced and looked after..no different with Golf GTI's..
VW have a history of good build quality and good marketing.. also they know how to tap into getting people to want to own a VW, they're clever folk..but it comes with a prestige you can ultimately trust.
You could say the GTI concept was even cleverer, a sports hatchback, understated and classless..that's what i like about them myself.
There's a kinda quirkiness about them too with attention to certain small design details.. and i think once you've owned one all the other mass produced vehicles seem bland.
Of course they aren't without fault..but on the whole your glad you've got that VW badge on the front ;)

Ive had my mk3 for almost 5 years now. Ive probably driven it 100 miles in the last year! Its tucked up in my garage and i use a van on a daily basis or my missus car.  People are always telling me i should get rid of it, sell it etc. Save yourself some money, why are you insuring it etc etc.

Trouble is i just cant bring myself to get rid of the thing. When i do take her out I cant get enough of it, just love the sound of the 16v on full chat. Okay its not the fastest thing in the world, but it still packs a punch for a 12yr old car!

Ive driven so many newer cars over the years and none has put a grin on my face like my golf. Ive driven my mates mk4 1.8t gti quite a lot and it just doesnt compare to my trusty ol' valver.

Okay its had a few niggling issues over the years, but what car doesnt really? I put about 40k on the clock in the first 3yrs of ownership and it didnt fail me once!

Currently having a power steering issue with it at the moment which i will hopefully rectify today, but thats half the fun, getting your hands dirty and working on it.

And of course theres the colour thing, mine is definately the best colour 'twilight violet poly' (dusty mauve)
