Maybee, but it makes it more difficult to get to the bolts, and also its a hell of a lot easier to clean it up if you can remove it from the car complete. Took a lot of scraping to get the crap out the coolant channel on mine!

WOW!!
Thanx for the response guys!! Will let you know how i go!! As Im not mechanically minded me car is in for a full service on Friday. Have put it in for the 40K service cos its done 52k but got no evidence of i ever having a 40K service. Quite confident of getting it sorted cos my local mechanic is a proper sort and dead cheap too - only ?150 for the service - a full ?90 less than the main dealerhip! PLus I get a Polo to get back and forth to work!!
Hopefully it should all be sorted then!! Plus having new linkages put in the gear box and a few bits and bobs....looking forward to some easy motoring!!
Thanx again guys!!

you can leave the carb on the manifold when you take it off
Just never-ever start the car without fixing the carb back on properly, holding it on with your hand doesnt work! Tried that when we were fixing my brothers old 1.3, small fire ensued
