Or leave it standard and in a few years when they become collectable yours will be so rare it will be worth a fortune as all the others are modified and worthless to collectors

I did this and drove to Manchester from Aberdeen... 1 year ago exactly tomorrow - and some halfwit smashed into me and wrote it off!  The curse of Friday 13th!

Minor mods like CAI, remap, Millteks and wheels are very simple to put back to standard. Everything I have modded (apart from the exhaust as I swapped the standard for the Milltek) is in my garage ready to go back on when it comes to resale time.

As for the question, Id rather have a MK6 as its newer, but in a real world I would get a ED30 as it will be considerably cheaper for not much diffrence (in fact you get get 20bhp MOREpower in the ED30).

IMHO, the Mk6 is slightly better than the Mk5 in every way and is the first Golf I have actually liked the look of since the Mk1.
+1
The improvements are subtle but everything is that little bit better.

they are both good cars, just buy whatever you want.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

Yup.

I've had both and the mk6 is worth the extra cost if you've got the money.
If you're on a budget then the mk5 is a brilliant car.

Award for 'most diplomatic' thread in section goes to...
MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

Lol I was just thinking the same thing. Everyone is far to well behaved.

On seconds thoughts I wouldn't bother with the MK6, it's just a MK 5.5 really ;)

Wow, thats given some food for thought.
I never even considered the ED30, are they hard to come by?
Some one mentioned the R32, they go some around the same money as a MK5 on a 09 plate, but are around 6 miles to the gallon worse off.
The running costs are not the issue, I would just like the car to be there when I got back to it and I think the Golf is not over the top in looks as say the Evo X.
I have 3 months to make my mind up and the GTI is ticking all boxes, are they easy to live with as a daily car, for example, Parking up safely. I know with the RS's you were worried every time you left it. Thanks for all the advice.

them that drive a mark 5 is because they cant afford a mark 6- 'simples!'
would u rather drive an old model or something that is the latest, design....
its like buying a tv.  either buy an old lcd or stump up for a glossy 3d tv.....
at the end of the day its all about budget.  if u buy a mark5 then u will join a fair few of them on the road- there are 'faeces' loads of them.

An edition 30/pirelli is just a 2wd mk6 Golf R or a scirocco R at much cheaper rate.
Just because somethings newer does not make it better.
Edition 30 there are plenty for sale about, the pirelli is the rare one ,and the one i wanted i just could not find one with xenons in the colour i wanted. So i went for a new mk6 option and wish i had not.
