  • Vw Golf 1.6 estimated to have around 500+ bhp
1. humming noise when driving
2. it goes away when turning right but comes back when straightening up or goin left
3. its not making the steering wheel vibrate

pretty sure its the front offside wheel thats making the noise.  Like i said it goes away when turning right but comes back again when straight or going left, it is intermitent however?  Its just the noise it makes, a really loud humming and its not because of the tyres, tyre pressure or tracking as these were all done / replaced last week.

Any suggestions?

yeah its the bearing, usually the inside wheel when it does it, so when turning left your pulling on the rhs wheel and pushing on the lhs one, so the drivers side would be the culprit but you should do both sides at the same time.

could well be..... BUT

a good way to check these is to jack up the car - Rock each wheel to see if there is any play. if there is then its likely thats the bearing you need to change.

normally as stated above - if you steer left you hear a humm noise from the right..... then its the right hand side... and vice versa.

make sure when you swap the bearing it doesn't just slot on...otherwise you need a new hub (and another new bearing as it will last a few months before more grief!)

they need a press to fit them (my old golf had a slot on bearing for a few months!)
