Hi all, new to VW's.
« on: 06 March 2010, 20:21 »
Hi

I've just got my first VW. :)

It's a 1999 MK4 Golf Gti 1.8T in Jazz Blue and I'm really pleased with it, coming from a 2l Vectra this is an absolute blast.

I have had it for about a month now and so far the only thing I have done is a service and buy a few parts as work is really busy, however I have a list of things that I want to do to it already.

I'm going to start small with genuine flat wipers all round and de-locking the drivers door on the outside then a Bora sport gear knob, illuminated vents and cruise control inside, this will give me time to save for a Forge 007 and a re-map.

It did come with a few niggles that I want to rectify:

One lower arm bush is totaly shot (two new arms with bushes and ball joints have been bought...£45 including postage)
The gear box is a little clunky at times so I've got some genuine VW oil to do an oil change.
It needs a new passenger side wing because of two dents. (I could get it repaired but I can't be bothered)
There are two small patches of rust at the very front of the bonnet.
No water coming from the rear washer jet.
Passenger side wing mirror doesn't heat.

Not a huge amount but as I only paid £1800 for the car with T&T I'm happy.

And now a few questions if I may to the knowledgable crowd out there.

1. Rear wiper arm, I have a new MK5 arm and flat blade so how the hell do you get the original off without trashing the rear screen (the guy at VW today admitted that even they have broken rear screens doing this job).

2. Replacing the gearbox oil, I have seen the thread on doing this job but does anyone have any photos of the plugs in need to remove just so I'm sure I have the right one's.

3. Side light bulb's, is there anyway to change them other than removing the headlight cluster as I can't seem to get to the back of mine to change them.

4. Tyres, I am happy with the standard 16's as the roads around me are all rural and are not in the best state, however it has 4 different cheepo tyre's on and I would like peoples opinions on what would give me the best bang for buck as it were tyre wise.

5. Wrong dump valve fitted, someone in the cars past has fitted a non recirculating dump valve and blocked off the hole that was left in the large black pipe with part of a coke can I kid you not, I am going to have the car MOTed shortly and even though it feels like the car drives fine will this have any impact on the emissions in any way or the performance of the car.

I think that about covers it for now, I'm off to place a few ad's in the wanted section.

Cheers.

:)

welcome along

wiper - no idea sorry
gearbox oil- there is 2 17mm allen key bolts one underneath for draining and one half way up the front for filling/level (on flat ground so it just dribbles out it holds about 2.3ltrs) but get it checked out as mine has just spat its box and that was clunky/grinding gears.
sidelight bulbs-if you have the hands of a 5yr old then yes it is possible
tyres- unfortunatly its personal choice really
dump valve- if its an agu it will run an atmospheric dv with no real problems but the later aum will throw a hissy fit.

fear is temporary, regret lasts forever...
