a wrap would be a better option,
you can paint a car for £100 solid black but thats crap paint, our clearcoat is about £350 +vat a gallon so you get what you pays for lol
Meh, in some instances this is true. The point I am trying to make is that you can do a good job on a budget, and I have. But I have also seen people throw 5k at a paint job and it turn out pishy blotchy orange peely nonsense. All depends on whether you know where to shop for your kit, the skill of the person with paint gun and the amount of prep you put in. Prep is critical.
I've painted my mk2 and others in my mates garage over a weekend, using my ingenuity/ skills I saved a heap of cash and got to ensure that job was done right first time. I've painted fair amount of cars over the years now and know that you don't need to spend an absolute fortune to get a job as good as, or in some instances, even better than factory.
350+ the vat for clear?

Bonkers, for anything but a show mk2 and even then you'd need water on the brain or be a lottery winner to pay that sort of cash for clear on a hatch that probs would sell for 10k tops if it were a mag featured show winner.
However I'm with you on the wrap idea, there was a guy on here offering to do intro offer for forum members. I'd have a look if I were you before you go ruining your car/ resale value. Decent gloss black mk2's are getting harder to source these days.
