Just after fitting coilovers, myself, forgot the notched nut also that sits inside the rubber top mount.  Looks like your mounts are shagged also, why dont you fit new ones while your at it.  G60 items are good.  I will get a pick of my set up tomorrow night for you.

You should have the parts assembled from top down as follows.
-nut (under bonnet)
-top cap (under bonnet)
- notched nut (under valance)
- top rubber mount with bearing.
- small washer (sits on the shoulder to thead of the damper)
- Coilover top cap for spring.

Me thinks this is correct anyway!

I found the easiest way to fit these, was to screw down the coilover all the way down and off the thead until they are loose.

Fit all the items at the top.

Then screw back up the spring nut by hand, its alot easier to do off then on.

Measure both with a rule so they are even.

What breed of coilovers are you fitting?

Nah, Top mounts are brand spankers ( G60 ones too ) As were all the other parts fitted.

Not sure what the " black cap" is but assuming it's not a hanging judge. Do you mean the top mount? as that's the only black thing there?

I think the mounting looks odd, doesn't look right as it were. I did mention this but was over ruled by someone with more experience...

Can someone post a pic of their top mount so I can see what they should look like?

Cheers

Where did these coilovers come from, are you sure they are right, cant wait to see pick.

The black thing is not the mount, its the cap that secured the spring on the old shock.

WTF? Coilovers came from volksbits. Defo for a mk2 golf. No I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with the fitting of them hence my original post.

Black thing? Cap? could someone please clarify? Why would I be putting the old cap that secured the spring to the old shock?
Just to also clarify there were coilovers on this previously and all we did was refit them the way they were on there before....

Am I being thick? I'm not a mechanic but I can see it ain't sitting right. Would love someone to post a pic of theirs so I can see how it's done properly, because if someone else says " you put the thing on the thingy, but not that thing, you know the other thing", type of reply I may very well loose the will to carry on....

the black plastic cap is merely to cover the top of the top mount after you finish tightening up etc, it keeps all the crap out!
when fitting the coilovers all you need to do is put the coilover though from underneath, it should have the rubber mount already on it, then the top mount sits on top, tighten up job done!

the black bit you can see between the shock tower and the retaining cup, is that the rubber of the top mount, or the metal from the old mk2 spring top cap?  if the former its buggered or you built it wrong, if its the latter, you definitly built it wrong

this is how you build it, note #8. thats the spring top mount, you dont use this on coilovers, or part 11.
so it should be: coilover -> top mount -> sloted nut -> car -> retaining cup -> top nut:

Cheers RJ, that is excellent, and I can even see that image at work! Will have a look at the car over the weekend as I think this is going to require a pull apart. I think we did it coilover -> top mount -> sloted nut -> car -> retaining cup -> top nut: but can't be 100%. Also the retaining cup sits about 2in higher than the inner wings making my no.9 plastic caps useless
