Can there be smoke without fire????
« on: 14 February 2010, 19:19 »
I drove my mk2 for only the second time ever today and for the brief 5 mins it was fun- however the car filled up with smoke after about 5 min- not burning wire smoke it was weird.
But I have just replaced the heater matrix and this was it's first run - had the heater on to check it worked - could this be the culprit?
I checked under the bonnet no smoke there only a leaking flange now the water is flowing round the system.. Do new matrixs' give off smoke for a bit?
Im hoping i haven't short circuited something when I had the dash out.

If you had oily hands and left grubbyprints all over it I suppose it could smoke if it got mega hot, but I doubt it lol

Pretty sure the hands were clean - but u never know what was on it already .... having bought the car with broken bypass valves I have no way of knowing how long it is since anything has flowed through the system. We'll see next time I
take it out I suppose ......
which sadly won't be till the weekend ..

did you clean the matrix before you fitted it? if not, thats why! learnt this myself the hard way, the matrix is coated with a oil/varnish type thing to prevent corrosion when in storage. this takes ages to burn off and it reeks!
