I'm not getting into that! GTi and Ed30 were both great cars - particularly the Ed30. However, this time around I had to take a long, hard look at what I was paying for fuel, and with around 24,000 miles per annum I needed to save some money. So, weighing up everything the GTD seemed to be a good mix of performance, economy and comfort. No regrets so far...

Yes i agree with you about not getting into the differance's between the  2cars. Its thristy the ED30 if your doing lots of miles!!

Done a couple of hundred miles on the motorway, very quiet in 6th gear.  At 90mph you can still hold a normal conversation without having to raise your voice over road or engine noise.  I've not noticed any wind noise at all when on the motorway.

You've done 90mph?  Surely on a private road or on the autobahn i'm sure

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

Not sure as I havent driven one, but all I can say is that its faster than the GTI.

hahahahahahahaha each comment you make gives me a smile

Its a great car both that and the gti I sometimes say to myself I would love a gti but I would miss the torque and mpg I can get out of my gtd. Answer get both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have driven one you will know how quiet it is and how well it goes, I dont think anyone who has got one will have a bad word to say about either the gtd or gti.

Totally agree with the above posts. I recently traded in my mk5 170 DSG GT for a mrk6 DSG GTI and I have to admit I do miss the mpg I used to get from the diesel.

I'm chuffed to bits with the new GTI and the performance especially as I have always wanted to own one. However I think the answer is they are both fantastic cars.

If they did a slightyl hotter GTD, like a GTDR with around 210BHP plus and a bit more styling tweeks, I would deffo get one for my Mrs. At the moment, we are going from ED30 to mk6 GTI. We went from GTID (mk4) to the ED30, the mk4 Diesel PD150 was a great car, but very grey if you know what I mean.

The only thing that puts me off the current GTD is the 'greyness' of it, It just looks like everythig is in black and white compared to the GTI.

Still if you get a GTD i'm sure you'll be more than happy.

Way things are going, next time around I'm really keen on the next gen Focus RS if the rumoured hybrid set up specs are real, as we all spend far to much on fuel and tax and the moment.

Well dont own a vw golf got the fr seat tdi 170. I find it a really good engine. Pulls damm well and on motorway its a breeze. Not owned a high end petrol so cant really compare.

But big thumbs up for me. A little remap down the is in order i think and then ubber power lol.

Your thoughts and views on the GTD170, performance figures , and what's it like to drive on M-Way?
Thought I'd just contribute a set of performance figures taken from Volkswagen Driver magazine:

               Mk6 GTI   Mk6 GTD   Mk6 GTI   Mk5 GTI   Mk5 ED30
               Manual   Manual      DSG         Manual      Manual
0-60         6.3         7.5            6.5            6.0         5.6
0-80         9.6         12.6         10.1            10.7      9.4
30-50 3rd   3.2         3.1            2.4            3.0         2.9
50-70 4th   4.3         4.7            --            4.1         3.7

overall mpg   35.2      46.7         32.5         28.6         27.8
As you can see ingear figures are not too bad. These are what we use on a daily basis really, unless your a traffic light grand prix Paxo driver.

It's the real world that counts! Having said that, an Edition 30 GTD would hit the mark. But it won't happen.
