use the small speaker boxes designed for 6x9s, then mount these on your rear shelf

On a standard shelf? That would be too heavy won't it?

Or just make an MDF one with or without boxes mounted underneath, sounds 10x better

Or just have none at all and use components instead. Sounds 100x better :)

decent 6x9's are a good alternative to a sub IMO.

i never used to run 6x9's as like has been said, they do not give as good a quality sound as a round speaker and all the important sound should come from your front speakers.this and the fact that i always used to run a sub.

I now need my boot space for prams etc so a sub is out of the question.

I run JBL GTO 937 6x9's in an MDF shelf, amped and run on the lower end of the freq range for bass fill, with 13cm JBL mids in the front doors and JBL 3.5's for highs in dash with freq seperated by crossovers. Good sound quality, and will be even better once i amp fronts, and add in a graphic Eq to fine tune things more :)

a bit of modification you could almost definitely get 6.5'' speakers in the front, I have never known it to be an impossibility.
Buy 6.5'' comps, install them properly, amp them instead, mess about with getting the tweeters in nice and aimed correctly ( not facing the window) and it will sound unbelievably better plus you won't even hear/feel the 6x9's.

short of that, modding the front doors to accept 6x9's is always nice and gives good results :)

well if you plan on amping the fronts and adding an EQ then we are talking probably 200 quid minimum if you buy new.

You could make decent mounts for 6.5 inch fronts, use the 6x9 amp to power them, you would not need an EQ by this point and you would have a better sounding (nothing to do with boy racers, couldn't be further from it) system and maybe some pocket change leftover.

boy racers tend to have 6x9's and try to cram as many speakers as possible into the car in whatever position possible... slight irony in your last post.

the EQ i already have, and the amp i wont pay more than £50 for (not what you know, its who ya know )

i dont want to add bigger fronts and/or mod my doorcards/pods. i want it all 100% standard.

boy racers tend to cram everything in, 6x9's sharing airspace with subs, speakers in every door, dash etc etc and in my experience have no clue whatsoever about setting a system up!

I know exactly where you are coming from, but, My initial post was in ref to people saying 6x9's are no good in a rear shelf, i was not asking for advice on my setup. i have been installing and setting up audio for 9 years odd, i know what works for me and what i could do IF i wanted to.
