T_T posted some huge posts on the MkVI forum about servcing and oil.  Just the oil topic alone was an epic!

Give it a search.

LOL

Yeah, they're the ones i've been reading. I made a post for T/T but i dont think he's been on in a while. There is plenty information on there. I think i'm probably just going to stick with T&D as i don't clock the miles up.

Thanks

what's the difference between long life oil and the oil that was used for T&D services?
Is it better quality in the longlife service oil or what?

In brief:

The old 502.00 spec allowed the use of some semi-synthetic as well as other fully synthetic 5W40 oils for T&D.
503.00 was the first longlife spec using 0W30 fully synthetic oils.
The current 504.00 specifies 5W30 fully synthetic.

Functionally there's not really much difference between 503.00 and 504.00 oils, except a slightly higher viscosity on the 504:00 at lower temps. To keep your turbo bearings happy, use an oil approved to VW 504:00 - Castrol Edge 5W30 is the common one.

For what its worth i haven't found any posts of exceptional mileages between services from people under the LL regime.  Certainly not many people run for over 15 months or 15k miles.

Do the dealers use different oils ? - i doubt it. Yes they need to hold different oils for servicing other and older models, but most likely all MkVs and MkVIs get the same in reality.

Personally i'd prefer to change the oil at least annually, so the T&D would be my choice.   Thinner oils aren't necessarily a good thing either, there may be a miniscule benefit at low temperatures but theres also a similar chance of increased engine seal leakages.

The current service plan allows servicing for 3 years, which under T&D is 3 annual visits (or every 9.5k miles) and a brake fluid change at year 3.   Someone priced up the first LL service schedule at their local dealer and that alone was £255.  The service pack seems a good deal if youre planning on keeping the car for the period.

Note soem dealers also offer their own service packs, which include wear n tear items. These are typically £250-350 p.a.

Thanks for your answer, cleared it up a bit.
