I'm really coming round to the idea.  Quite honestly, we're not above 7C that much even in an ordinary winter.  And this last month has been no joke.

So tell me someone, do you actually need a different set of wheels, or can you just put the tyres on the existing wheels?  I have the 17s by the way.

If you just buy the tyres then 225/45/17 winter tyres are £160-£180ea fitted for the better known brands, and not a lot cheaper for Korean stuff.  Then you're faced with £10-£12ea to refit the summer tyres again, and another £10-£12ea to go back to winter.  So between now and December you'd be shelling out £200/corner for tyre swapping.

For that same £800 you could buy the winter tyre set up from VW (anyone know what the UK price is ?) , or a set of used 16" MkV alloys off ebay for £200 and buy 205/55/16 winter tyres at £110each fitted (total £640).

Well seen as the worst of the Winter weather seemed to be over i thought my recently purchased Vredsteins were to be stuck in the garage ?

But hey presto the snow and sh-tty weather seems to be back so i decided to fit the winter wheels,

The difference between them is like night and day, the grip from the Vredsteins is miles better than F1s and you actually go into corners and under braking with so much more confidence.

Never really messed about changing tyres to suit road conditions as i have always been under the impression that a good tyre is about the best grip your gonna get on ice and snow etc. so you tend to make do, i would definatley recommend to others the difference is unreal,

Not really happy with the silver R32 alloys on the Mk6 thou 
Also fitted front mudflaps while the wheels were off, to stop the stones etc flying down the side of the car

I think when the Vwr alloys go back on when the weather gets a bit better,
The R32 alloys are in need of a makeover Gunmetal grey me thinks ?
To much silver and blingy for me, but they will do for the noo,

Well impressed with Vredstein Wintracs, might even try there summer tyres when the F1s are worn down

I heard a radio announcement yesterday that a certain road was "only open to 4x4s".

Are 4x4s really that much of an advantage?  How do they compare with a front-wheel-drive wearing winter tyres?

Would it be more sensible to highlight the advantages of winter tyres rather than 4-wheel-drive in announcements like that?  This was in the north of Scotland, so it's not as if they're likely to get prolonged periods over 7C most winters.

It really feels warmer here, there was a definite thaw during the night, but the temperature was still only reading 4.5C this morning.
