Non fault accidents increasing insurance?
« on: 13 January 2010, 16:18 »
OK so I got rear ended in October, and figured it'd raise my insurance £50-100 maybe...just done a couple quotes on GoCompare and Confused, without this claim, they're asking £1000 (I'm 21 with a mk2 8v GTI with 1yr NCB...kinda what I was expecting). With the non fault claim, £1600!! WTF!! This is f**kin' ridiculous, phoned them up (it was Admiral) and he went through my details, and I said yea they're all correct, and he said he doesn't know why it's gone up so much but there's nothing he can do

EDIT: OK, so when I did the policy I wanted it to start 18th Feb which was too far in advance, and on Confused, it came up "we will do this policy to start at 12/02/2010 and let you know when it can be applied to the 18/02/2010", and seeing as my birthday is the 16th of Feb, I turn 21....as of the 12, I would still be 20, so I did another quote where my bday was a few days earlier, so I would be 21 on the 12, it knocked £600 off!! This is crazy...I hate insurance

I'm gutted because my insurance ran over my birthday but the insurance was due 3 months before, so I couldn't wait it out haha! Paying £650 right now with Adrian Flux so I'm hoping renewal will be much cheaper.

err you didn't claim on your insurance.  You claimed on the other guys insurance (ie the one who went up the back of you) didn't you?  A non fault claim is if someone hit you but they weren't insured itsn't it?

a non-fault claim is when there is an accident or claim, but you have someone elses insurance to go through.

if there is an accident or claim but there isn't a third party to go through,(i.e someone hit you and drove off, theft or vandalism claim) unfortunatley it will go down as a fault claim  as it is your insurance company that is paying for it.

Unfair i know but thats just how insurance works.

so you get financially penalised for someone else's mistake?  I didn't know that.

Surely it would make sense to start up small claims court proceedings (£50) and get the extra cost back from the offending driver.

yes defintley if you can find the person responsible, but 9/10 someone has spanked you in a car park drove off, no witnesses and the 'CCTV' ain't working. In this instance if you want to make the claim as its your insurance paying out for damages its a fault claim.

So yes if you can find the person responsible, take them to court or get the police involved because it will save you in the long run.

If not you should weigh up if its worth making a claim or repairing the vehice out of your own pocket. coz damges might only be £200 but it might put your insurance up by more next year so you would of been better of just paying it yourself.

Bit harsh on  us but you can see where your underwriter is coming from if they've stumped up money to repair your car

A7, it seems to me that you're getting confused. If someone hits you, and you get their details, and you make a claim, their insurance company pays for it, therefore it's a non fault, and it doesn't affect your premiums (unless you're under 21, apparently lol). What Danny is saying is that if someone does something to your car, but you don't get details (hit and run, criminal damage) then if you make a claim, you're insurance will pay for it, and it will affect your premiums.

so did you claim of your insurance or his?

i had the same once after a non fault claim had been settled. it turned out my insurers hadn't been told it had been settled and it was still on the computer as pending. It was sorted over the phone and the renewal was pretty much the same as the year before.
