Golf V5 - Service schedule
« on: 09 January 2010, 14:34 »
I'm possibly buying an 03 Golf V5 this weekend - before you say anything I know the 1.8T would be the better choice however this car ticks all the boxes spec wise, is a 3 dr and well priced. Coil pack done etc, plus it's near me and I've been without a car for 3 weeks, in this weather I'm desperate for something!!

Anyway my question is what are the service schedules on these. The car has 100k and is due a service according to the OBC which I'll use as a negotiating tool - when are the major services due? My last 2 cars have been BMWs and they are Oil-Insp 1-Oil-Insp 2.

How do VW service schedules work? Also any idea on basic cost?

Cheers.

On VW's it's all down to how the car was setup when it was new. It could of been either time and distance fixed servicing (every 12 months or 12k miles) or if the car was going to be doing 15miles a year or more then it would be setup on longlife in which the car would be serviced when the dash display said "Service".

I would imagine with 100k miles on the V5 it would of been set to long life so if the computer says it needs a service then it should be done.

Just for the record though, V5's aren't popular but if its cheap enough then it could be a good buy. Don't expect much return when you dicide to sell it on!!

Cool, thanks for that. So the services are always pretty much the same eg oil, filters plugs and and check over then? Just wondering if coolant/brake fluid need doing at certain intervals - I like to keep my cars properly serviced so would get done anything that was scheduled.

I would like a 1.8t but would want a 180bhp 3dr with reasonable miles and haven't really seen any near me for £3-3.5k which is what I'm hoping to get the V5 for. Not a bargain but reasonable for an 03 so if it's in good condition I'll probably go for it. It's only round the corner and red too which I prefer

Not sure about the coolant but brake fluid should be changed every two years. (I think coolant is the same but can't be sure!)

I have the 180bhp 1.8T and it is good. Had it two years but I did pay £8.5k for it but it is an 03 plate and only had 61k on it. Only has 72k on it now.

V5 is a good car and at that money a bargain if it's nicely specced!

V5 are good cars, not as tunable as 1.8t but then the V5 is more reliable, imo. Good spec too.

Thanks for the replies, I like the look of it and the spec is good - full leather, Bose, Climate etc plus FSH although due one now.

I'm not big on mods really but might go for some Eibachs springs.....

Coil pack's been done, anything I should look out for?

Nothing else really to wrong. If it's set to long life servicing even better, depends how much you drive. Mph is not that bad too. Remap will get it to about 190bhp (if you have the 170 bhp model) sorts the flat spots out. Exhaust's can make it sound too boomy if you don't get it set up right.

V5 came with Climate as standard aswell as Auto dimming mirror and auto wipers. I assume by Bose you mean it has the DSP soundpack. I had this on a 4Motion some years back and it is good. The leather turns it into a nice upmarket feeling car!

Get some pics up if you get it!

The V5 is a VR6 minus a cylinder. The early model is 150bhp, later is the one to go for as its 170bhp.
These engines are chain driven so check for chain rattle gearbox end.

Remap will get it to about 190bhp (if you have the 170 bhp model)

Don't expect a 20bhp gain from a remap, probably 10bhp extra max.
Obviously being a non turbo it won't be as easy to tune.

Thanks for the info - slight change of plan. Spoke to the seller and apparently the car is not running right and he thinks it's the coil pack again. He's taking it back to the garage that did it but I don't know how long that'll take and it is kind of off-putting so for the mean time I've just bought a run-around in the form of a Mk3 Gti http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1413571.htm

At least now I have a car and might hold out for a 1.8t.
