As title, aux belt broke this morning and I've got one on order, should be here by 2pm ish.
I know the procedure, slacken the alternator mounting bolt and push down on the alternator to slacken and just put the belt on, but I need to know the route taken by the belt.

Someone please save this image and draw round the correct route by the belt please




*******Also checked the water pump pulley and it looks like there are hardly any grooves, should the grooves be the same depth as the alternator and the intermediate pulley? Ta.

Don't worry about it the pulley arrangement is/will be obvious, if it fits ok then it is ok.

I always seem to run into problems shortly before a RR don't I. Lesson learnt though...ALWAYS PUT ANTI FREEZE IN THE CAR.

Turned car on....

screeching sound....

I though, must be the power steering belt on this cold morning...

Anyway, got on with de icing the windscreen...

screeching still bad...

gave it some revs and it quietened down...

held the revs at 3k for a bit to warm engine to de mist...

No screeching...

Screeching came back...

I though ffs...

Suddenly started smelling burnt rubber...

Hear the sound of something snapping...

screeching stopped...........

Plumes of smoke coming from under the bonnet...

street covered in smoke stinking of burning rubber...

Open the bonnet...

Aux belt snapped...

Inspection begins...

Water pump pulley frozen solid...

Car has no anti freeze...

Tank cap off, water is slightly frozen...

FCUK SAKE!...

Lesson learnt. Don't run the car in winter withOUT anti freeze, I was lucky only the belt snapped and not the cyl head cracked unlike Ben Lessani last year. Ordered new belt from the local auto parts store and should be here for about 2pm, I'll be buying it along with some anti freeze.


Quick! Hide in the hole and don't let anyone see me!

Well car was running perfectly before the belt snapped. Coolant level is fine, when I returned to the car about 20 minutes later to leave a note on the windscreen (shouldn't be parked where I am) the coolant had melted enough to be fluid, so no major leaks or anything thankfully as far as I can see. Water pump hopefully is fine, I turned it over by hand and it seemed fine so no damage done in that area.

Yes I am major Plonker.
