MK3 8v popping out of reverse.
« on: 01 January 2010, 21:16 »
Hello chaps. how goes it?

My golf gti keeps popping out of reverse. its odd, when you select reverse sometimes it misses the gear completely and you have to go back out of gear then back in,once you have it in gear if you go at slow speed with minimal load on the flat shes all good and wont pop out.

The moment you go up a incline or add more load = speed. then it pops out.

However if you hold the gear stick when reversing it reverses just fine.

Is this a known issue?. the gear linkage for reverse seems a bit indirect and tired at times, could that be the fault or is it something more serious?

Many thanks guys

James

That is the signs of a worn gear box.

Fair one, whats a gearbox swap like in a MK3? as it was a complete twit of a job in my mk2 1.6 as you had to twist the box to get it out

As long as the forward gears are ok. I wouldn't worry too much about it, may just be a problem with the reverse, try not to use the reverse unless you have to and keep your hand on the stick.

you could mount a hook and a bungee on the dash. Just wrap it round your nob and attach ends to hook. Then you can use both hands on your wheel.
