Ok just asked for a price from VW for a set of 16" Atlanta wheels as per the Golf SE and whilst they're happy to quote ( I won't put the figure here to save everyone draining their keyboard from all the tea they'd inadvertantly spit our when reading the figure) but they're comment was:

"I have looked into the fitting of 16" wheels scenario and all my systems indicate that 16" wheels are not suitable for the GTD, GTI or Golf R the GTD's are fitted with sports suspension etc, where as the golf SE, S, TWIST etc have standard suspension."

He then goes on to quote 17" Meribels as per the winter program.

Whats your thoughts Wheel disciples?

Why not just pick up a cheap set of 17'' Monzas from the classifieds? Even if they're a bit scabby it doesn't matter as you could always get them powdercoated. There are always cheap sets of 17'' Monzas knocking around (unless you're actually looking for a set I guess!!)

They don't look right on a GTD, plus I was after 16" for the snow in them there hills.  Besides if my understanding is correct they'll just worm up anyway.

This is the the non-Monza thread and you just recommended Monza's, I ask you who committed the biggest sin!

Perhaps though a winter wheels thread might be good, might even make a good seasonal sticky looking at the number of posts in the forum.

Yep, mentioning Monzas in the non Monza thread is a sin, but they still make the most sense to use as winters.

17'' Monzas don't worm up.

Thread started a few hours ago and I've just spent ages ruining my eyesight on the computer just for you

He wants to look harder as theres an official 16" steel winter wheel listed on ETKA for the GTI/GTD. The R needs bigger wheels as it has bigger brakes.
They have also been listed as a factory option since 2009 and still are.

Greetings from Norway!

Just bought new rims for my winter set and thought I would share as I've not found pictures of these rims on a GTI. These are the Sparco Assetto Gara in 18", made by OZ at the stock ride height. I would prefer the GTI to be about 2cm lower with this set so I may lower it a tad with new H&R springs although my summer Monza set look fine stock.

Anyway here they are.
